A rivalry between Google and other companies:
The month of June seems to be the favorite pick of all the biggies as far as product announcement is concerned. Apple, on its annual WWDC bash, declared to launch a number of products along with the much-awaited Macbook Pro, which features iOS 6 and Retina display. After some days, Microsoft talked about its latest tablet/ computer ‘Surface’. The tablet/computer will be available at Microsoft stores under the brand Microsoft.
This week Google announced to upgrade its search platform and launch latest editions of the Google Glass, Android (Jellybean), Nexus Q, and a new multimedia equipment – the Nexus 7 tablet.
Despite the fact that Google announcements seem promising, one cannot deny that this search giant is facing challenges from many fronts. Google is winning at some places, but it’s struggling in many other areas.
When it comes to the context of superiority in the areas of search and advertising, Google is matchless. It’s performing well in the area of Android. However, the internet giant never speaks of the financial impact of Android on their business. As far as the significance of Google Apps and Google Chrome OS is concerned, their contribution in the areas of airlines, corporations, campuses and retailers is noteworthy. Google Maps is another major player and YouTube is simply ahead of the pack, though its financial impact on the business is also unknown. These Google products are doing well for sure. Aside from them, Google is competing with a few other companies also including DropBox, Sonos, Paypal, Square, Twitter, Hulu, and Yelp.
A costly battle ensues
This warfare may prove costly for Google. There are thousands of employees working for it. But, still there is a dearth of actual talent which can help it achieve wins on every front. Google has also lost that position which helped it win star talents in the team.
In order to draw attention of the talented people, Google is buying companies. But, this doesn’t seem sufficient. Rival companies such as Facebook, Square and Instagram, have rather become more powerful in this area as far as attracting talent is concerned.
On going back to the earlier days when Google had monopoly in the online market, it is discovered that the number of competitors was pretty less. In fact, the companies were also not very strong. Yahoo was big, but it couldn’t even match the search technology of Google. It proved weak in the areas of advertising also. Microsoft was primarily concerned with its software business during those days to win.
However, Google is facing tough competition since the second decade of the 21 st century. Rival companies such as Facebook, Apple and the newbies including Square and Dropbox look more aggressive, driven and focused.
In its endeavor to grow further, Google is somewhere leaving its main territory ‘search’ at risk to its own end-users. The introduction of Google+ into search results has been dissatisfactory so far.
Google was known for its ambition and conviction in the earlier days. When search engine was almost on the verge of its saturation point, Google introduced impressive changes. In the area of advertising, it came up with the concept of text ads and churned big mullahs out of it. Its futuristic plans included laying emphasis on intelligent software. Google Maps and Google Mail, which initially were small entities, became the real Google products in terms of quality.
On taking a sneak peak at the 1 st day of Google I/O, Google Glass seems to be quite impressive. In this product, some modifications need to be made. However, it reminds of the old Google days and can potentially put up a good fight before the competing companies.
